It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to recognize that tough economic times often force people to turn to the black market — or in the case of cocaine, the “white market” — just to survive.
It looks like that’s the case in Peru, South America’s pristine mountain country, once home to the advanced Inca civilization at Machu Pichu.
Peru’s production of cocaine is now eclipsing that of Columbia.

And it looks increasingly likely Washington will now seek to step up the “drug war” in Peru. This is, in reality, not a war on drugs but a pretext for a war on a dissenting population showing signs of weariness with neoliberalism.
